Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has started reforming the Ukrainian prison system, which can be considered a historic process, reports dialog.ua.
Zelensky introduced a law on a new form of punishment for criminal offenses in Ukraine – similar to probation supervision in the US. This is an extremely important decision that separates Ukraine from Russia and its Soviet heritage, the famous political scientist Stanislav Belkovsky writes about it on his Telegram channel.
“In this way, the (post-Soviet) prison system will gradually be dismantled as a factory for the destruction of human dignity and health, a separate civilization and culture that creates the ‘eternal prisoner,'” commented Belkovsky.
Ukrainian authorities will be able to impose a new type of punishment on prisoners for a period of 1 to 5 years. Those convicted of minor crimes will have their rights and freedom restricted through “supervision and social-educational measures”, which means that probationers will have to regularly communicate with the probation authority, inform the authority of a change in their place of residence, work or study, and coordinate departures outside Country.
Convicts may be required to wear electronic monitoring devices, live at a specific address, comply with court orders prohibiting certain activities, undergo substance abuse treatment, and more.
