Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Monday that Russia’s advance in Ukraine had been “halted” and that the situation for his troops was now “much better” than in previous months.
“Russia’s advance has been halted,” Zelensky told French broadcaster BFM TV. “Our command, our troops have stopped the Russian advance in eastern Ukraine.”
“I can give you this new information: Right now the situation is much better than in the last three months,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian leader also announced that Ukraine is currently building “more than 1,000 kilometers)” of fortifications.
“When we talk about fortifications, we’re talking about a continuous process,” he said. “We are not talking about a few kilometers or hundreds of kilometers, but more than 1,000 kilometers of construction,” he said.
“It’s a very difficult task. They have to be durable and resilient to climate change, and they have to be resilient to whatever military equipment is being used against these defense lines,” he said.
Referring to a comment by French President Emmanuel Macron, who said last month that sending French troops to Ukraine was not out of the question, Zelensky said: “As long as Ukraine holds its ground, the French army can remain on French territory.”
