Ukrainian President Zelensky warns of difficult winter ahead in eastern Ukraine as Russian attacks increase

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Wednesday of “difficult” months on the front in eastern Ukraine. Stopping Russian troops there will be difficult now that winter is approaching.

The Russian army has been putting heavy pressure on the Ukrainian defenses at Kupiansk, Lyman and Avdiivka for several weeks. According to the Ukrainian army leadership, there has been a “significant increase” in Russian attacks and bombings in Avdiivka in particular. The Ukrainians would hold out for the time being, writes commander Oleksandr Tarnavsky Telegram.

Zelensky confirmed on Wednesday that his troops are having a difficult time in the east. “Difficult weather conditions make for difficult defenses at Lyman, Bakhmut, Donetsk and Avdiivka,” the president said via Telegram.

In the Donetsk region, the temperature will fluctuate between 2 and 8 degrees below zero on Wednesday. It is also snowing there at the moment. That makes the fighting difficult for the frontline soldiers.

There will remain a risk of night frost in the coming days, but the temperature will rise to 11 degrees during the day this weekend. In combination with rain, this makes the terrain difficult to access for heavy equipment.
