Ukrainian President Zelensky Warns of Consequences If US Reduces Aid

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, warned today that a reduction in US aid to Ukraine would be a bad signal, France Press reported.

“US passivity or lack of support would be a bad signal. This would not be fair to anyone,” the Ukrainian president said in an interview with German TV station CET. He made this comment at a time when another aid package for Ukraine is blocked in the US Congress.

“The United States is our number one partner,” Zelensky pointed out. After providing Kiev with tens of billions of dollars worth of weapons since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, US President Joe Biden’s administration ran out of funds at the end of 2023. The US president has asked Congress to approve about $61 billion in additional funds for Ukraine, but the negotiations with the Republicans, regarding the issue of immigration to the USA, are stalling.

The last delivery of US military aid to Ukraine was announced on December 27, and the White House reiterated that without a budgeted extension, there would be no further aid. In the face of this deadlock, Zelensky called on Germany to use its economic weight to mobilize its European partners to fill the gap.

“Many countries maintain significant economic relations with Germany, and their economy depends on Germany’s decisions, because Germany has a strong economy,” Zelensky said. “Germany may be able to consolidate EU support,” he added.

On Wednesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on his European partners to step up their commitment in the field of armaments. “Europe needs to do more to support Ukraine to defend itself,” Scholz said, adding that the contributions earmarked by European countries for 2024 have so far not been high enough.

As for the USA, for his part, Zelensky also commented on a possible victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections. “I don’t think the whole policy of the United States depends on one person,” he said, adding that a large majority of Democrats and Republicans support Ukraine.
