Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky supports the “one China” policy that Beijing supports. He thanked President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China for China’s support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
This became clear from published details of the Ukrainian president’s conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Ukrinform reports. They were also published on the website of the head of state.
The president expressed gratitude to the Chinese side for the humanitarian aid and noted, that Ukraine properly cares for the safety of Chinese citizens in our country.
They have discussed and ways to strengthen the Ukrainian-Chinese partnership.
“Before the full-scale Russian invasion, China was the number one trade partner of Ukraine. I believe that our conversation today will give a powerful impetus to the return, preservation and development of this dynamic at all levels, the President of Ukraine emphasized. This should be facilitated by the resumption of the work of the bilateral intergovernmental commission and the appointment of the ambassador of Ukraine to China.
The President of Ukraine emphasized the readiness of our country to remain a guarantor of global food security. Zelensky noted that currently the Ukrainian ports are blocked by Russia, and with them – the export routes. In this context, the parties expressed joint support for the need to properly implement and continue the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Zelensky informed about the implementation of the global humanitarian program “Grain from Ukraine”.
The leaders of Ukraine and China have agreed to maintain regular dialogue.
Xi Jinping sends emissaries to Ukraine
He spoke on the phone with Zelensky
We recall that Xi Jinping assured his Ukrainian counterpart on Wednesday that China will send special representatives to Ukraine and hold talks with all countries to resolve the crisis there.
Xi said at the beginning of April that he was ready to talk with Zelensky. Zelensky has repeatedly asked Xi to meet with him, including after the Chinese leader visited Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last month.
Recently, Beijing has become a hub of diplomatic activity of sorts, especially since the re-election of Xi Jinping for the country’s president for an unprecedented third term.
China proposed a plan for peace in Ukraine and Xi Jinping visited Moscow. Soon after French President Emmanuel Macron together with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen visited Beijing, and after them German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock went to the Chinese capital.
The US and Russia interpret the conversation between Zelensky and Xi Jinping
Moscow doubts that the “puppets” in Kiev appreciate the calls for peace, it is too early for Washington to draw conclusions
Moscow views the conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky as a sign of Beijing’s willingness to help the negotiation process. This was stated by the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
“We recognize China’s willingness to make efforts to start a negotiation process. We see that our basic approaches are in line with the position that the Chinese Foreign Ministry published on February 24,” she noted.
However, Zakharova again accused Kiev for rejecting all reasonable initiatives for a political and diplomatic solution to the crisis and questioned whether Ukraine’s “puppet” leadership would be able to accept calls for peace.
The diplomat pointed out that the Ukrainian authorities and their Western sponsors have already made it clear how they can put peace initiatives on the back burner.
For his part, the spokesman for the National Security Council at the White House, John Kirby, said that Washington welcomes high-level talks between Beijing and Kiev.
However, he added that there is no way to know yet whether it will lead to a meaningful movement, plan or proposal to achieve peace.
Earlier today, Xi Jinping and Zelensky held a telephone conversation for the first time since the outbreak of war in February 2022.
The Chinese leader is reported to have stressed that Beijing will make efforts to cease fire as soon as possible and will send a special representative to Ukraine.
