Ukrainian President Zelensky: Russia’s Advance Halted, Situation ‘Much Better’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Monday that Russia’s advance in Ukraine had been “halted” and that the situation for his troops was now “much better” than in previous months.

Russia’s advance has been stopped,” Zelensky told French broadcaster BFM TV. “Our command, our troops have stopped the Russian advance in eastern Ukraine.”

“I can give you this new information: Now the situation is much better than in the last three months,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian leader also announced that Ukraine is currently building “more than 1,000 kilometers)” of fortifications.

“When we talk about fortifications, we’re talking about a continuous process,” he said. “We are not talking about a few kilometers or hundreds of kilometers, but more than 1,000 kilometers of construction,” he said.

“It is a very difficult task. They must be robust and resilient to climate change, as well as resistant to whatever military equipment is used against these defense lines,” he said.

Referring to a comment by French President Emmanuel Macron, who said last month that sending French troops to Ukraine was not out of the question, Zelensky said: “As long as Ukraine holds its ground, the French army can remain on French territory.”
