Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine should prepare for winter as he fears Russia will renew its campaign of systematic strikes on energy facilities.
Last year, repeated attacks by Moscow’s forces targeted Ukraine’s power grid, leaving thousands of people without heating and electricity in freezing temperatures for long periods of time.
“We must be prepared for the possibility that the enemy will increase the number of strikes with drones or missiles on our infrastructure,” Zelensky said in his daily address.
“All our attention must be directed to defense … to everything that Ukraine can do to make it easier for our people to survive this winter and to increase the capabilities of our troops.”
Kiev has already said it is beefing up defenses to protect key infrastructure.
“The Ukrainian air defense is now stronger than last year,” Zelensky said.
Ukraine has received significant air defense systems from the West, including US-made Patriot missiles.
“Unfortunately, (the air shield) still doesn’t fully protect the entire area. And we’re working to make it even better.”
Zelensky called on the international community to support his appeal.
His statement came shortly after presidential adviser Andriy Yermak said he had arrived in the US as part of a delegation to discuss support, including “strengthening Ukraine’s defenses”.
