Ukraine’s Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk expressed Zelensky’s expectations for Tel Aviv’s aid because he is Jewish.
“As the country’s ambassador with a Jewish president, I can say Zelensky has higher expectations from Israel than Israel can deliver,” he said recently.
Korniychuk also speculated that Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is in a difficult situation to balance Israel’s relations with Ukraine and Russia because Zelensky is Jewish.

He also pointed out that many Ukrainians are eligible to immigrate to Israel under the Law of Return—180,000 according to Israeli estimates.
“Our leadership believes that Israel is the only democratic country that the two leaders have good relations with,” Korniychuk said, referring to Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelensky actually asked Israel to take on the role of mediator several times over the past year, including during his most recent phone call with Bennett.
Korniychuk told Zelensky’s message to Israel: “Thank you, we appreciate all your efforts, but we need more.”
