Ukrainian President Zelensky Expects New Western Defense Agreements

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that he expects a number of new Western defense packages for Ukraine to be signed this month and next. “We are preparing new agreements with our partners, strong bilateral agreements,” he said in his nightly video address.

Since Russia invaded the country in February 2022, Kyiv’s Western allies have reached out several times to provide Ukraine with military aid. But as the war drags on into its third year and little progress has been made, resistance to more aid is growing and money and equipment have only been coming in at a slow pace in recent months.

Zelensky did not say which countries he hoped to finalize agreements with. Earlier this month, Britain, one of Kyiv’s staunchest supporters, said it would increase its aid to Ukraine to 2.5 billion pounds ($2.9 billion) in the coming financial year.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday he would go to Ukraine in February to finalize a deal that would see Paris supply more advanced weapons, including long-range cruise missiles.
