Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants an international investigation into the plane that crashed in Russia on Wednesday. The Russians say a total of 74 people were killed, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war.
Kyiv says he is not sure that 65 Ukrainian prisoners were on board. But Zelensky doesn’t rule that out either. “It is clear that the Russians are playing with the lives of Ukrainian prisoners, the feelings of their loved ones and the emotions of our society,” the president said.
Zelensky is calling for an international investigation because the incident did not take place on Ukrainian territory. He also doubts whether the Russians are reliably investigating the incident.
Russia reported on Thursday that the plane’s two black boxes had been found. The flight data is stored electronically on it.
According to the Kremlin, Ukraine shot the plane out of the sky, but the Ukrainians have not confirmed this. Ukraine does acknowledge that a prisoner exchange was planned on Wednesday.
According to Kyiv, the Russians gave no warning that a plane carrying prisoners was arriving. That is common with these types of exchanges.
Russia has urgently requested an additional meeting of the UN Security Council, which will meet on Thursday.
