The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived this Monday (09/18/2023) in the United States to attend the UN general assembly and then meet with his American counterpart Joe Biden in Washington. “Olena Zelenska and I have arrived in the United States,” the Ukrainian president announced on X (formerly Twitter), referring to his wife, to hold meetings in the HIMin New York, before traveling to Washington.
“I will attend the General Assembly, the summit on the Sustainable Development Goalsthe Security Council meetings at the UN, and several important bilateral meetings,” he added. Zelensky, who already participated by videoconference last year despite Russia’s protests, will be one of the first to address the Assembly in person in the start of Tuesday’s sessions, and the next day he will appear before the Security Council in a new session on Ukraine convened this time by the Albanian presidency in office.
“Ukraine will put forward a concrete proposal to UN members on how to strengthen the principle of territorial integrity and improve the UN’s ability to prevent and stop aggression,” said Zelensky, who will begin his visit to the United States by visiting Ukrainian soldiers who “are undergoing treatment and rehabilitation” in the country.
Zelenski will meet with other international leaders, such as the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with whom he will hold a meeting on Wednesday in New York. It will be his first in-person interview with him, after meet by video conference in March. The Ukrainian president will then go to Washington to meet with Biden and “leaders of the US Congress and parties, military authorities, businessmen, journalists and members of the Ukrainian community,” he explained.
