Zelensky visited the “forward positions” in the city, which is located near the Russian-occupied Donetsk, and wished the soldiers a happy Orthodox Easter.
A picture posted on the website shows Zelensky with soldiers at a table with traditional Easter cakes.
Orthodox Easter was on Sunday.
Kyiv announced the visit hours after the Kremlin announced that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin had also visited two frontline regions on Monday.
Commander: Heavy fighting continues for Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine
Fierce fighting continues in Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine as Russian troops carry out heavy artillery strikes, the commander of the Ukrainian Army’s Ground Forces, Colonel General Oleksandr Sirskyi, said on Tuesday.
At the same time, he emphasized that “the situation is currently under control”.
Ukrainian soldiers inflict heavy losses on the enemy and “significantly slow down” Russian attacks, Sirsky added.
Russian attacks have been repelled in other areas of the front as well, Sirskis said.
It is expected that the Ukrainian army could launch a large-scale counterattack in the next few days.
The latest report of the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW) on the situation on the Ukrainian front states that Russian attack units, which may be from the private mercenary group “Wagner”, managed to capture two more blocks in the northwest and center of Bakhmut.
Information available to ISW indicates that the heaviest fighting is currently taking place in the center of Bahmut for control of the railway.
In late March, ISW reported that Russian forces controlled around 65% of Bakhmut, but Russia now insists that it already controls 80% of the city.
The battle for Bahmut has been going on for the ninth month.
ISW: Prigozhin appears to be regaining Putin’s favor
Yevgeniy Prigozhin, the founder of the Russian mercenary group “Wagner”, is apparently regaining the favor of President Vladimir Putin, according to analysts of the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Since the regular units of the Russian troops have not been able to fulfill the tasks that Putin has set them for the winter offensive, “Wagner” will receive reinforcements (ammunition and political recognition). This is a sharp departure from the Kremlin’s course regarding the use of “Wagner” and Prigozhin forces in Bakhmut, the think tank explains.
Sources linked to Wagner said on Monday that the group is preparing three motorized rifle brigades of mobilized soldiers to reinforce its flanks in Bahmut, according to the ISW.
Prigozhin has also confirmed that the airborne forces are working alongside Wagner and indicated that his group is actively receiving ammunition.
“Prygozhin has advocated for the Wagner to receive more artillery shells, and this indicates that Prigozhin has resumed supplies of ammunition from the Russian Ministry of Defense,” explains ISW.
