President UkraineVolodymyr Zelensky, mentions that there are members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) which supports attitude Russia.
Zelensky said, “There are members of NATO countries who support Moscow from its position,” Thursday (17/2), quoted from AFP.
Russia’s attitude in question is not to allow Ukraine to become a member of NATO.
However, Zelensky did not want to mention the country while hoping they would change their minds.
“We are not going through this with these countries and do not want to pose any risk or diplomatic conflict,” he continued.
As a result of the NATO member’s support for Russia, Zelensky assessed that it would be difficult for Ukraine to enter into the defense pact.
“We as a country want to join NATO and have been trying for years,” Zelensky told German media outlet Bild.
“But the process has stalled. There are causes and effects associated with it. It’s not only Russia that refuses to join Ukraine (to NATO).”
Later, Zelensky stated that it was Ukrainian citizens who should determine whether or not the country entered NATO. Even so, he considered holding a referendum at a time like this sounded unreasonable.
“The road to NATO and the European Union is very long. Ukraine needs security guarantees to go through that process,” Zelensky said again.
“NATO is a guarantee of security, that’s what we want to get. This guarantee means we won’t lose our independence.”
Ukraine has long said it wants to join NATO. However, NATO is still not ready to accept the country, given the many processes that must be passed.
Meanwhile, Russia has urged NATO not to give Ukraine its membership. Moscow also asked NATO to withdraw their forces near the country’s borders.
However, the West rejects this Russian wish, seeing it as Moscow’s way of organizing the future of a potential NATO partner. Western countries have also often said they would impose severe sanctions on Russia if it attacked Ukraine.
