President Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskydenounced the attack Russia which triggered a fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Friday (4/3). He accused Russia of trying to spread nuclear terror and wanting to repeat the Chernobyl disaster.
“No country besides Russia has ever shot a nuclear power generating unit. This is the first time in our history, in the history of mankind. This terrorist state is using nuclear terror,” Zelensky was quoted as saying. AFP.
Russia is indeed trying to control the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in recent days. Ukraine continues to try to push back Russian troops.
However, Russia reportedly continued to fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on Friday morning. As a result of this attack, one of the six nuclear reactors in the nuclear power plant caught fire.
The spokesman for the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Andriy Tuz, said that the reactor was indeed not operating due to renovations, but still had nuclear fuel inside.
“We urge them [Rusia] stop shooting. There is a real nuclear threat at Europe’s largest atomic energy station,” he said, as quoted by the Associated Press.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, stated that if an explosion occurred at the nuclear power plant, the impact could reach ten times greater than what happened at Chernobyl.
The Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded when it failed to carry out safety tests in 1986. Chernobyl was also exposed to severe nuclear radiation which made some of its areas uninhabitable to this day.
The radioactive impact of the explosion at Chernobyl is said to be equivalent to 400 times the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
