Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy calls on the West to stop toying with Russia and impose tougher sanctions to end the “unreasonable war” in Ukraine. Zelensky also stressed that his country will remain independent.
Reported from the news agency ReutersSaturday (28/5/2022), Zelensky’s criticism of the West has intensified in recent days as the European Union moves slowly towards a possible Russia’s oil embargoand when thousands of Russian soldiers tried to lay siege to the eastern Ukrainian cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk.
Three months after his invasion of Ukraine began, Russia has stopped its attacks on the capital Kiev and is seeking to consolidate control over the Donbas industrial area in Ukraine east, where Putin has supported a separatist insurgency since 2014.
“Ukraine will always be an independent country and will not be destroyed. The only question is what price our people have to pay for their freedom, and what price Russia will pay for this senseless war against us,” Zelensky said in a speech late on Thursday (26/5). .
“The ongoing catastrophic events can still be stopped if the world treats the situation in Ukraine as if it is facing the same situation, if the existing powers do not play games with Russia but really insist on ending the war,” Zelensky said.
He was complaining about the disagreement inside European Union about more sanctions against Russia, and asked why some countries were allowed to block the plan.
The European Union is currently discussing a sixth round of punitive measures, including an embargo on Russian oil imports. This required unanimity, but Hungary opposed the idea on the grounds that its economy would suffer too much.
