Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addresses the United States (US) Congress virtually, Wednesday (16/3/2022). He opened his speech by praising the courage of the Ukrainian people and saying his country’s destiny is being decided now amid the Russian offensive.
He said his country was facing its worst attack since World War II. However, he said his people never gave up despite continued attacks by Russia.
I have the honor to welcome you on behalf of the Ukrainian people, the brave and freedom-loving people, who for 8 years have resisted Russian aggression. Those who have given their best son and daughter to stop this full-scale Russian invasion,” he was quoted as saying CNN International.
“Right now, the fate of our country is being decided. The fate of our people in which Ukraine will be free and they will defend their democracy,” he added.
Zelensky continued, “Russia has attacked not only us, not only our land, not only our cities, but it is a brutal attack on our values, basic human values,” he stressed.
He also specifically offended US President Joe Biden by asking him to be a peace leader.
“I spoke to President Biden. You are the leader of your great nation. I wish you to be a world leader. To be a world leader is to be a peace leader.
In the speech, Zelensky also emphasized the importance of a no-air zone in Ukraine, and asked the US to increase sanctions on Russia.
Responding to the speech, the members of congress were united in giving a standing ovation.
