The mayor of the Ukrainian city of Krivoy Rog was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. The news was announced by the police and confirmed by the President of the country Volodymyr Zelensky.
The body of 48-year-old Konstantin Pavlov was found in front of the entrance of his house, Zelenski said. He added that investigators were working at the crime scene.
The head of state expects on Monday the heads of human rights agencies to present him with the initial data from the investigation.
Krivoy Rog, with a population of about 600,000, is Zelenski’s hometown.
The president expressed his condolences to Pavlov’s family and relatives, promising to personally monitor the investigation.
The mayor’s body was found by an acquaintance of his, and there was a weapon next to him. The signal was received at 4 p.m.
Vadim Rabinovich, an MP from the Opposition Platform for Life, wrote on his Facebook page that Pavlov had been killed and posted photos of the body being found. They show that he is lying in a pool of blood and there is a machine gun next to him.
The general producer of the TV channel “112 Ukraine” Artyom Marchevski also wrote on Facebook that Pavlov was found with a gunshot wound to the head, “Ukrainian Pravda” states on its website.
The press secretary of the police in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Anna Starchevska, stated that criminal proceedings have been initiated under an article of the Criminal Code for premeditated murder, the publication also points out.
Pavlov, 48, was a two-term member of the Verkhovna Rada. In December 2020, he became mayor of Krivoy Rog from the Opposition Platform – For Life party.
