Ukrainian MP Davyd Arahamia, leader of the Servant of the People faction in the Verkhovna Rada, revealed that in the spring of 2022, the Russian delegation proposed an end to the war.
Arahamia was part of the delegation of Ukrainian negotiators. Shortly after the invasion, Putin’s delegation offered to stop the war, but on the condition that Ukraine renounces NATO membership.
“They (the Russians) were ready to end the war if we accepted neutrality and made a commitment not to join NATO. In fact, this was the key moment,” Arahamiya said in an interview with “1+1” television, Ukrainska Pravda reported.
Asked why Ukrainian representatives did not accept this proposal, Arahamia said that it required a change to the constitution, which states that Ukraine will become a member of NATO. Besides, the politician said, the Ukrainian authorities do not trust the Russians.
David Arahamiya said that the Ukrainian delegation had no confidence in the Russians that they would do what they promised – namely to stop hostilities. Such a “peace versus neutrality” plan would only be possible with security guarantees, and it is not clear how Kiev can get such if it abandons NATO.
Russia and Ukraine were negotiating peace at the start of full-scale war. Several rounds of negotiations were held in Belarus and Turkey. After Russian troops withdrew from Kiev, negotiations were frozen.
