Ukrainian Military to Receive 500,000 Artillery Shells: Latest Updates and Developments

Within the next few weeks, the Ukrainian military may receive up to 500 thousand artillery shells of 155 mm caliber and up to 300 thousand of 122 mm caliber, negotiations for the purchase of which from third countries were conducted on the initiative of the Czech Republic. Bloomberg writes about this on Saturday, March 2, citing Jan Zires, head of the Department of Defense Policy and Strategy of the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic.

According to the official, a number of European countries are already participating in the Czech initiative. At the same time, Zhires did not specify from which suppliers the shells could be purchased. Suppliers and sponsors of the project to purchase shells may be revealed after Kyiv receives ammunitionGires pointed out.

The fact that the Czech Republic has found 800 thousand shells for Ukraine from potential suppliers outside the EU was announced in early February by the President of the Republic, Petr Pavel, in the margins Munich Security Conference. The Netherlands immediately responded to this proposal, promising to provide 100 million euros for the purchase of shells. At the end of February, Belgium also announced that it would take part in the purchase of ammunition, having allocated 200 million euros for this. At the same time, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen offered to send for military assistance Kyiv receives interest from Russian funds frozen in the EU since February 2022.

Germany is also looking for shells for Ukraine

Along with Prague, Berlin is trying to find ammunition for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the German weekly Der Spiegel wrote in February. According to the publication, Germany is negotiating this with India. At the same time, the German Ministry of Defense did not comment on the information about negotiations directly with Delhi.

The search for ammunition for Ukraine occurs against the background of the suspension of military assistance to Kyiv from the United States due to the reluctance of Republicans in Congress to agree on the allocation of funds for the corresponding supplies. Since the beginning of full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine Kyiv received more than 2 million 155 mm shells from the Pentagon.

This caliber of ammunition is used in artillery found in many countries around the world – it is a common caliber and is also the standard for NATO guns. The Ukrainian Armed Forces can use from three to six thousand such shells daily, military experts previously estimated.
