The Ukrainian military announced the liberation of the village of Staromayorskoye in the west of the Donetsk region. Heavy fighting has been fought over the village in recent weeks.
A video in which the military talks about control over Staromayorsky was published by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The loss of Staromayorsky on Thursday morning acknowledged one of the commanders of the so-called “DPR” Alexander Khodakovsky. Officially, the General Staff of Ukraine has not yet announced control over the village. It is difficult to independently verify the statements of the parties in conditions of active hostilities.
Earlier Thursday, The New York Times, citing sources, announced the start of the main stage of the Ukrainian offensive in the south of the country and the deployment of reserves. Russian pro-war bloggers report the same. However, in these reports we are talking about a strike on another sector of the front – south of the city of Orekhov, in the direction of Tokmak. There, judging by the published videos, a large number of armored vehicles were put into battle. According to unconfirmed reports, the Ukrainian military managed to move south east of the village of Rabotino.
Staromayorskoe is located a few tens of kilometers to the east, on the border of the Zaporozhye and Donetsk regions. Since the beginning of June, the Ukrainian military has driven Russian servicemen out of several settlements in this direction. If successful in Staromayorsky and further south, the Ukrainian military could reach the main line of Russian fortifications in the direction of Berdyansk and Mariupol. It is located south of the village of Staromlynovka.
Pentagon sources say the goal of the offensive in the region is to cut off a land corridor that connects Russia-occupied regions in southern Ukraine with annexed Crimea.
Offensive operations in the Zaporozhye and Donetsk regions Ukraine began in early June. The Ukrainian military says the offensive is proceeding according to plan, albeit behind schedule. The main line of defense of Russian troops has not yet been overcome, which has allowed Russian President Vladimir Putin to say several times that it has not been successful. Officially, the goals of the offensive (except for the strategic goal of the entire campaign – the liberation of the entire internationally recognized territory of Ukraine) are not named.
