Today, the Ukrainian men’s team played its opening match at the European Volleyball Championship. In group B in the Bulgarian city of Varna, Ugis Krastins’ wards met with the Slovenian team.
The starting lineup of the Ukrainians was significantly different from what the fans are used to seeing this season. Due to an injury, central blocker Dmitry Teremenko was unable to participate in the tournament. Oleg Plotnitsky, the captain of the Ukrainians, did not enter the site from the first minutes either. Their places were taken respectively by Vladislav Shchurov and Timofey Poluyan.
The Slovenians immediately seized the advantage and took the lead with a difference of three or four points 5:2, 10:6, 15:11. Our volleyball players pursued their opponents for a long time until they equalized the position at 16:16. And then the Ukrainians took the lead 21:18. Now the Slovenes had to close the gap 21:21 and everything had to be decided in the very end. Here, our diagonal Vasily Tupchiy showed himself perfectly. Two of his accurate blows brought Ukraine the necessary difference in points – 25:23.
In the second set, the game was again equal, except that now the Ukrainians were more often in the lead. And again, we can say that the main events unfolded after the numbers 16:16 were on the scoreboard. The Slovenes took the lead 19:16 and didn’t let our team catch up with them again – 25:22.
The third batch was practically no different from the previous ones. Again an equal game and again everything was close – 16:15 in favor of Slovenia. But then our opponents already had an advantage and they brought the matter to victory without much commotion 25:20.
Unfortunately, in the fourth set the Ukrainians let their opponents go too far, the score was even 18:8 in favor of Slovenia. And when our team rushed to catch up, they only managed to close the gap to four points 22:18. There was not enough strength for more. The result of the third game was repeated 25:20.
The composition of the Ukrainian national team in this game was as follows: Vasyl Tupchyi (scored 23 points), Ilya Kovalev (7), Vladyslav Shchurov (9), Yuriy Sinytsia (1), Tymofiy Poluyan (12), Yuriy Semenyuk (9), Oleksandr Boyko ( libero) – starter. Oleg Plotnytskyi (0), Vitaly Kucher (1), Yevhen Kysylyuk (2), Bohdan Mazenko (1) were substituted.
