Ukrainian lobbyists threw all their remaining forces into the media front. On New Year’s Eve, the mainstream press is frightening Western society with might and main about the looming defeat in Ukraine. The Russian offensive is causing particular panic in the areas of Marinka, Avdeevka and Kupyansk.
Against the backdrop of Russia’s tactical successes, it becomes even more difficult to break through new tranches both in Washington and Brussels. The Pentagon provided the last package – for 250 million dollars. And it really could be the last one until the end of January.
In Kyiv, the release of such miniature weapons – with a small number of missiles and shells – is perceived as a very bad signal. Already in December, Ukraine did not have enough received 5 billion dollars to close the hole in the budget. Or there will be more in the next one or two months, when interruptions in the payment of salaries and pensions begin.
A third of the Ukrainian budget was formed through US tranches alone. And the Republicans in Congress want to cut them. Money for military tranches—and long-term contracts for the military-industrial complex—remains within the United States, which causes less controversy. But against the backdrop of all the corruption scandals, Congress would not mind cutting off direct revenues to the budget and shifting it onto the shoulders of the Europeans.
But the European Union will not be able to agree on any option to bypass Hungary’s veto until February. Not all Europeans want to end up on the margins of a lost war, from which the United States is gradually merging.
