Ukrainian Journalist Detained in Crimea for Coverage of Crimean Tatar Trial

In the annexed Crimea, Lutfiye Zudiyeva, a journalist from the Ukrainian edition of Grati, was detained, the editorial office of Grati reports.

According to the publication, Zudieva was supposed to cover the trial in the case of the deputy head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Nariman Dzhelal, and the Akhtemov brothers, whom the Russian authorities accuse of sabotage. At first, Zudiev was not allowed to go to court, and then the journalist was detained. At the same time, she had a press card and an editorial task with her, Grati notes.

Together with the journalist, 12 more Crimean Tatars, relatives and friends of Dzhelal and Akhtemovs, were detained, who were trying to get into an open court session.

According to the publication, the police department tried to take Zudieva’s fingerprints through threats, but she refused. As a result, a protocol was drawn up against the journalist on participation in the mass simultaneous stay of citizens in a public place “for the purpose of further coverage in the media.”

The editors of the publication demanded the immediate release of Lutfiye Zudiev and other Crimeans detained at the Supreme Court.

Russian authorities arrested Nariman Dzhelyalov and the Akhtemov brothers Asan and Aziz in the fall of 2021 in connection with a case of sabotage on a gas pipeline in the village of Perevalnoye.

On September 21, 2022, the Russian-controlled Supreme Court of Crimea sentenced Dzhelal to 17 years in a strict regime colony, and Asan and Aziz Akhtemov to 15 and 13 years in a strict regime colony, respectively.
