“Help Ukraine, Mariupol. Help Azovstal right now”, singer Oleh Psiuk shouted from the stage in the Italian city of Turin after the band performed the song ‘Stefania’. Russian troops have been bombing the steel factory in the port city of Mariupol for weeks on end. The city is almost completely in the hands of the Russians, but some troops are still fighting there. Citizens would also still be present in the city.

According to the bookmakers, Kalush Orchestra has a good chance of winning, partly due to the wave of public sympathy after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russians. In a video speech released ahead of the event, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he believed the Kalush Orchestra would win. “Europe, Vote for Kalush Orchestra, (Song) No. 12! Let’s support our compatriots! Let’s support Ukraine!” he said.
