Ukrainian drones attack nuclear plant that Russia controls in Zaporizhzhia

kyiv, Ukraine. Officials at the nuclear power plant Russia controls in Zaporizhzhia reported that the site came under attack on Sunday with Ukrainian military drones, including an attack on the dome of the plant’s sixth power unit.

According to facility authorities, there was no serious damage or casualties and radiation levels at the plant remained normal after the attacks.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) indicated on Sunday that its experts had been informed of the drone attack and that “such a detonation is consistent with the IAEA’s observations.”

Without assigning blame, the director general of the United Nations atomic monitoring agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, warned of the security risks of such attacks.

“I urge you to refrain from committing acts that contradict the five principles of the IAEA and endanger nuclear security,” said the Argentine on the social network X.

The power plant has been in the crossfire since Moscow sent troops to Ukraine in 2022 and seized its facilities shortly after. The IAEA has repeatedly expressed concern about the nuclear plant, Europe’s largest, amid fears of a possible nuclear catastrophe. Both Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of carrying out attacks on the plant, which remains close to the front lines.

The plant’s six reactors have been shut down for months, but it still needs power and qualified personnel to operate crucial cooling systems and other safety features.

Also on Sunday, three people were wounded in Russian shelling in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.

In Russia, a girl was killed and four other people were injured when debris from a downed Ukrainian drone fell on a car carrying a family of six in Russia’s Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine, regional governor Vyacheslav said. Gladkov.

Ukraine denied involvement in a drone attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – which has been under Russian control since 2022 – and accused Russia of a false flag operation. Infographic Graphic News
