(CNN) A Russian soldier surrendered to a Ukrainian military drone on the battlefield of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine in May. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.

According to the WSJ, a reporter for the newspaper interviewed a Russian soldier at a detention facility in Kharkiv province on May 19. The soldier was under surveillance by security guards during his speech. CNN could not confirm whether the remarks were made under duress.

The WSJ reporter also interviewed the drone pilot.

The WSJ also released footage of the surrender by troops from the Ukrainian Army’s 92nd Mechanized Brigade. The video is edited and has music. CNN has not been able to verify the raw material of the video.

The footage appears to show Russian soldiers fleeing from a Ukrainian drone attack in the Bakhmut trenches. The soldier then stopped moving and tried to use gestures to communicate with the drone.

According to the WSJ, a Ukrainian military drone pilot decided to spare his life after seeing a Russian soldier begging.

The commander of the 92nd Brigade’s drone force confirmed to CNN that there had been a surrender.

According to the WSJ, the pilot dropped a piece of paper instructing the Russian soldier to follow the drone if he wanted to surrender. The video appears to show Russian soldiers following the drone. When the Russian soldiers reached the Ukrainian positions, they knelt down and took off their helmets and bulletproof vests. The Russian soldier was later detained by Ukrainian forces and transferred to a facility in Kharkiv province.
