The Ukrainian community in Leipzig was pleased with the large solidarity rally on Thursday in the city.
“It was very impressive that 5,000 people were there. But I wonder where they were in 2014 and 2015? We already had a war in Ukraine then,” said Oksana Makohon from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic community in Leipzig on Friday.
As of Thursday afternoon, people had gathered on the market square. Around 5,000 took part in a large rally in the evening. Many people held up lights or signs that read, among other things, “Hands off Ukraine” and “Putin finally set limits”.
Makohon said she was glad Ukrainians are not alone in the city at the moment. “But I also ask myself: what would happen if people had already demonstrated in such large numbers in 2014?”
