Ukraine’s armed forces will soon stabilize the situation on the battlefield and plan to form combat units for counteroffensive actions later this year, senior Ukrainian commander Oleksandr Pavlyuk said today, quoted by Reuters and BTA.
Pavlyuk was appointed commander of Ukrainian ground forces in a recent reshuffle of Ukraine’s top military leadership.
After nine months of largely stable fronts, the town of Avdeevka was captured by Russian forces in February.
Ukrainian forces were forced to withdraw from several settlements adjacent to Avdeyevka as Russian forces continued to advance. At the same time, the expected new aid package from the US, which is of key importance for Ukraine, has not yet been approved in the US Congress.
“We will soon stabilize the situation. We will do everything possible to prepare the troops for more active actions and to seize the initiative,” said Pavlyuk, whose speech was broadcast on television.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia would try to prepare a new offensive this spring or summer, but that Kiev also had a plan for the battlefield.
