A Ukrainian cargo plane crashed Saturday night in northern Greece, near the town of Kavala. The plane may have been carrying ammunition, local media reported. There were eight people on board according to the Greek state broadcaster ERT. It is unknown if there are any survivors.
The plane was en route from the Serbian city of Nis to the Jordanian capital Amman. The aircraft, an Antonov AN-12, ran into trouble over the Aegean Sea.
The pilot is said to have requested permission to make an emergency landing at Kavala airport due to an engine failure, but was unable to achieve this in time, Greek media said. On images that ERT published shows that the device crashes in flames.
The fire brigade deployed seven fire vehicles, but emergency services were unable to reach the wreck due to explosions.
