Manly still in yellow ahead of the final stage
Gotha, May 28th. Yuliia Biriukova from the Ukraine won the fifth stage of the 34th LOTTO Thüringen Ladies Tour in Gotha on Saturday. The 24-year-old from Limberg (Lviv), who competes for the French team Arkea Pro Cycling, rode almost 100 kilometers alone in the lead and crossed the finish line after 3:31.41 hours with a lead of four seconds. Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (Die Linke) conducted the award ceremony.
After 133.1 kilometers, Alexandra Manly from Australia (Team BIKE EXCHANGE Jayco) and Marta Lach from Poland (CERATIZIT WNT Pro Cycling) occupied the other podium positions. The best German was once again Ricarda Bauernfeind from Eichstätt (CANYON SRAM Generation) in eighth place. The group around Olympic champion Lisa Brennauer (CERATIZIT WNT Pro Cycling) crosses the finish line 8:50 minutes behind.
Alexandra Manly continues to lead the overall standings ahead of the sixth and final stage. The Australian is 31 seconds ahead of Marta Lach. Femke Gerritse (Parkhotel Valkenburg / + 43 seconds) still holds third place. The best German in the overall ranking is Ricarda Bauernfeind, who was able to move up to fifth place (+ 50).
Voices:
Yuliia Biriukova (Team Arkea Pro Cycling, stage winner): “It was a tough race but I’m so happy. It was my first win.”
Ricarda Bauernfeind (Team CANYON SRAM Generation, 8th place): “In any case, I’m satisfied with today. The first half went very well. I felt really comfortable on the Inselsberg. The second, flatter part was very windy and therefore very, very hard. I’m glad I finished the race in the first group.”
Romy Kasper (German national team, 19th place): “I really can’t complain about my performance on this tour after my break. There will be another attack tomorrow – the tour only ends in Altenburg.”
Katharina Fox (MAXX SOLAR LINDIG Women Racing, Best Club Driver): “I’m really happy to be on the podium again. It was a lot of fun to be able to ride in the leading group. That’s a good feeling. I’m enjoying the moment now – but of course my results here make you want more.”
Franziska Brausse (CERATIZIT WNT Pro Cycling, Olympic champion track): “We tried again to catch up with our group, but no one did it. We then saved our strength a little for the last day of racing on Sunday. I am personally satisfied. I wanted to use the tour to prepare for the rest of the season and I feel better here than last year.”
Course of the race:
87 riders started the race punctually in sunshine but gusty winds at 12.10 p.m. at the initially neutral start in Gotha. Up to the first sprint of the day after 15.5 kilometers in Schönau, Marta Lach (CERATIZIT WNT Pro Cycling) secured the full points in front of tour leader Alexandra Manly (Team BIKE EXCHANGE Jayco) and Femke Gerritse (Parkhotel Valkenburg). After that, the first top group of the day formed with Ariana Fidanza (Team BIKE EXCHANGE Jayco), Mischa Bredewold (Parkhotel Valkenburg), Romy Kasper (German national team) and Greta Marturano (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo). In the approach to the mountain classification on the Inselberg, the group was posed. The mountain classification on the Inselsberg – the highest elevation of this year’s tour – went to Ricarda Bauernfeind (CANYON SRAM Generation).
After that, Yuliia Biriukova from Ukraine launched an attempt to escape. The Arkea Pro Cycling rider from near Limberg was almost a minute behind. The second climb in Seebach after 56 kilometers went to Biriukova. At the first crossing of the finish line, which was also the second sprint classification, at 79.8 kilometers, the Ukrainian was further ahead, 31 seconds ahead of a group of 21 riders.
In the third and final sprint classification after 98.4 kilometers, Biriukova was still the sole leader. Places went to Alexandra Manly ahead of Silvia Zanardi (Team BePink). The lead was now 1:05 minutes. The Ukrainian was able to maintain this over the last 30 kilometers and finished as a soloist in Gotha. The three-time winner Alexandra Manly won the sprint of the chasing group.
