Ukrainian Army Withdraws from Avdiivka Amid Russian Capture and Increased Attacks

The Ukrainian army announced late Friday night its withdrawal from the city of Avdiivka, the center of battles that have been ongoing for months in the east of the country.

Earlier on Friday, the army confirmed that Russian forces had captured many of its soldiers in the city, acknowledging that it had “superiority in terms of numbers, artillery, and aviation.”

The Ukrainian general who commands the forces in this region, Oleksandr Tarnavsky, said via Telegram that the defenders of Avdiivka “were moving when necessary to new locations. It is unfortunate that during one of these moving operations, many of our soldiers were captured.”

On Friday, the Ukrainian army also announced its withdrawal from a position it controlled south of Avdiivka, as the situation has deteriorated in recent days on this front in the face of increasing Russian attacks.

At the time, Tarnavsky said: “After many months of confrontations, the command decided to withdraw from the Zenit site on the southeastern outskirts of Avdiivka. We made this decision to reduce the deployment of forces and improve the operational situation.”
