On Thursday, the Ukrainian army announced that it had made more gains in its counterattack against the Russian forces on the southeastern front, a day after announcing the liberation of a village that was a strong point for Russia.
The military said Ukrainian forces had made progress south of Orozhin, a village in the Donetsk region that Kiev said on Wednesday it had regained control of, as it tries to build up momentum for its push south into occupied territory towards the Sea of Azov.
Orozhin is the first village that Kiev has declared recaptured since July 27, a time lag that indicates the challenge Kiev faces as it seeks to advance through heavily mined Russian defense lines without strong air support.
The village is located about 100 kilometers west of the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk.
“In the direction south of Uruzhinin, the Ukrainian forces have achieved success,” Andrei Kovalyov, a military spokesman for the Ukrainian army, said in remarks broadcast on national television.
Kovalyov also said there was heavy fighting in the country’s northeastern Kharkiv region and around a village in the east not far from Bakhmut, a city captured by Russian forces in May after months of deadly conflict.
And he continued: “The enemy carried out failed offensive operations in the Senkivka region in the Kharkiv region and Budanivka in Donetsk, and fierce battles are taking place there.”
He added, “The Ukrainian defense forces continue to carry out offensive operations south of Bakhmut.”
