05 March 2024 at 12:41

The Ukrainian armed forces say they have seriously damaged a Russian patrol vessel off the coast of Crimea. That claim has not been independently verified. Russia has not yet responded.

The ship Sergei Kotov was hit by naval drones, according to an intelligence service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. According to Ukrainian military intelligence, the vessel was destroyed.

“Details about the crew are not yet available. There are deaths and injuries, but it is unlikely that crew members were able to evacuate,” said spokesman Andriy Yusov.

The Ukrainian secret service also released images of the attack. Its authenticity cannot be verified. The naval ship, which had already been repaired after an attack, is said to have suffered damage to its sides and bow.

Russia has not yet reported anything about the incident or possible casualties.

Drones were also shot out of the sky

Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff, shared a short message on Telegram that appears to refer to the attack. “The Russian Black Sea Fleet is a symbol of occupation. It cannot be present in Ukraine’s Crimea.”

On Tuesday morning, the Ukrainian armed forces reported shooting drones out of the sky. The air defense is said to have downed 18 of 22 Russian drones over the Odesa region.
