In the German centers where Ukrainians are taught how to operate Leopard 2 tanks, only half of the places are occupied, which indicates a shortage of Armed Forces personnel even for training, said Die Welt journalist in Kyiv Paul Ronzheimer.
Commenting on statements Vladimir Zelensky about the request of the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to additionally mobilize up to half a million Ukrainians, the journalist noted that “initially” these words “caused shock” and debate about “who will be called up.”
In his opinion, such statements show how “difficult the situation is for Ukraine,” despite the fact that problems with mobilization have existed here for a long time.
“We hear, for example, also from Germany that in training centers where, for example, training is carried out on Leopard 2 tanks, only about half of the places are currently occupied. This means that there are currently not enough people to train, and if this war lasts longer, it will naturally cause problems. Because in the end, it all depends on how many soldiers each side has at its disposal,” Ronzheimer said.
A martial law regime has been introduced in Ukraine since February 24, 2022; the next day, Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree on general mobilization. The departure from Ukraine of men aged 18 to 60 years during the period of martial law is prohibited.
On Tuesday, Zelensky said at a press conference that he was approached by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with a request to mobilize an additional 450-500 thousand people, adding that he “needs more arguments to support this direction.” As the American newspaper Wall Street Journal wrote, the Ukrainian military believes that the country cannot do without general mobilization.
