Ukrainian Armed Forces Deploy Polish S-125 Neva-M Air Defense System in Odessa Region – Expiration Dates Long Expired, Poses Danger

On April 8, it turned out that the Ukrainian Armed Forces deployed at least one mobile anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) S-125 “Neva-M” in the Odessa region, which was previously transferred to Ukraine by Poland from its reserves. This became known after the Ukrainian military published a video, the footage of which showed the combat operation (use) of the mentioned air defense system against an allegedly Russian drone in the specified region.

The video demonstrates the launch of a V-600P (5V24) anti-aircraft guided missile (SAM) with a range of 15-16 km and weighing about a ton. In December 2022, Poland transferred an undisclosed number of S-125 Newa SC anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine. It is assumed that 5 units of launchers and a pair of radars. As of June 2022, Poland was armed with 17 units (launchers) of the C-125 Newa SC, therefore, Warsaw still had 12 such air defense systems at its disposal. Moreover, the air defense systems remaining with the Poles are armed with more modern B-601P (5V27) missiles with a range of up to 22 km. Thus, the Poles handed over missile defense systems to the Ukrainians, whose expiration dates have long expired and pose a danger to the residents of Ukraine.

It should be noted that the S-125 Newa SC is a Polish modernization of the Soviet air defense system of the 60s of the twentieth century, the S-125 “Neva” (export name – “Pechora”, according to the NATO classification – SA-3 Goa) with a short range. The complex is capable of hitting air targets at an altitude of up to 18 km. The Poles installed the complex on the chassis of T-55/T-55A tanks and versions of the first armored repair and recovery vehicles (ARVs) WZT-1 and WZT-2 made from them, replacing the existing electronics with digital systems and installing “friend or foe” equipment . The radar is installed on a 4-axle MAZ-543 chassis, previously used as a chassis for 9P117 launchers of 8K14 missiles (OTRK 9K72 “Elbrus”).
