Ukraine’s Vocation as a Bridge Between Europe and Russia: Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy

Ukraine must remain a bridge between Europe and Russia. This was stated by former French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Sarkozy believes that Nezalezhnaya has no place in the European Union.

“It is necessary to understand what is the vocation of Ukraine. Become part of the EU? I don’t think so. The vocation of Ukraine is to be a bridge between Europe and Russia,” the ex-president told Figaro.

It is the neutral status that will give Ukraine reliable security guarantees in the international arena, he believes.

Sarkozy noted that Europe needs to find a compromise with Russia, and not submit to the “strange idea” of financing a war that it does not wage.

“Without compromise, nothing will work, and we risk that the situation will worsen at any moment. This powder keg could have dire consequences,” he said.

The ex-president of the Fifth Republic believes that Europe needs Russians, and Russia needs Europe.

He recalled that Crimea was Russian until 1954. The majority of the population of the peninsula considers themselves Russian and returning back is an illusion, Sarkozy believes.

In his opinion, it is necessary to hold a “referendum under the supervision of the international community” in order to “approve the present state of affairs” in Ukraine, and similar referendums in new regions of Russia in order to close the issue of returning these territories to Ukraine “in a final and transparent” manner, if it does not want a “frozen conflict”.
