Ukraine’s Victory: Sinking of Russian Battleship and Naval Attack

Ukraine got a long-awaited victory against Russia when they colored the night sky red over the Crimean peninsula this week.

34 sailors may have been killed and 23 have been confirmed injured, according to the Russian media platform Astra on Telegram.

On the night of Tuesday, they carried out a major air attack against the port city of Feodosia on the Crimean peninsula. The Russian landing craft “Novotjerkassk” was destroyed in the attack.

It is being described as the biggest loss to the Russian Navy since the outbreak of war.

Smoke continued to rise from the harbor the morning after the Ukrainian attack on Russia’s Black Sea fleet.

The first images and videos from the attack showed a huge explosion. The ship must have been fully loaded with ammunition, weapons and crew.

New photos show only wreckage of the once 112 meter long ship. There must have been 62 people on board when the attack occurred.

– There is almost nothing left of the ship, writes OSINT analyst Oliver Alexander Twitter/X.

Ukrainian President and former comedian Volodymyr Zelenskyj wrote on social media that “the ship has become part of Russia’s submarine fleet in the Black Sea”.

Battleship

– A battle with battleships takes place in the Black Sea, writes the news website Euromaidan Press.

They have compiled an overview of the many Ukrainian attacks against the Russian Black Sea fleet.

The sinking of “Novotcherkassk” is the sixteenth Russian ship that the Ukrainians have destroyed or damaged since February 2022. It has been an important part of their defensive struggle.

From the ports on the Crimean peninsula, the Russians have attacked Ukrainian villages and towns. The port has also been important for Russian war logistics.

Much of the Russians’ ammunition, fuel and other equipment is sent to the soldiers fighting at the front in eastern Ukraine from Crimea.

Therefore, it has been particularly important for Ukraine to hit Russia in the Black Sea. At the same time, the sinking of “Novotjerkassk” comes with an aftertaste.

Pushed back in several places

Ukraine’s offensive has stalled in several places along the front. Many describe the summer as a failure for Zelenskyj, both on the ground, but also on a diplomatic level.

Outside Europe, support for Ukraine is falling, especially in the USA. It is unknown what kind of help will be received in 2024 from the Americans.

Even in Europe, Zelenskyj faces opposition, as Hungary and Orbán create strife and discord.

The war is described as modern trench warfare. The front lines are moving minimally, and the number of killed and wounded soldiers is piling up.

At the same time, there are many indications that the Russians will come out of the war of positions best at the moment.

They have more soldiers, and it is easier for them to obtain more ammunition and weapons, with good help from North Korea and Iran.

This week they took control of the Ukrainian town of Marjinka. Strategically, it should be an unimportant city, but it is still a victory for the Russians.

Therefore, the attack on Russia’s navy is a huge prestige for the Ukrainians, in an otherwise gloomy time.
