Ukraine’s southern front successfully counterattacks Russian army and recaptures a village
Kiev (Agence France-Presse) – Ukraine’s deputy defense minister Hanna Maliar said on Monday that the Ukrainian army had intensified its counteroffensive and had retaken the village of Staromaiorske from Russian forces on the southern front.
“The village of Staromayorsk in the Donetsk region has been liberated. Our army is carrying out the task of cleaning up (Russian troops),” Marial said on the encrypted communication software Telegram.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a video on Telegram showing a group of soldiers carrying Ukrainian flags, who Zelensky said had “liberated the village of Staromayorsk”.
“Our South. Our brothers. Glory to Ukraine,” Zelensky wrote.
Ukrainian forces pushed Russian troops out of the village in one of the first such victories on the southern front since Ukraine launched its counteroffensive in June. The Ukrainian counteroffensive was intended to drive away the Russian troops occupying Ukrainian territory.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is on the sidelines of a summit with African leaders in Saint Petersburg, said there had been a “significant intensification of fighting” in the Zaporizhzhia region of Unan. (Translator: Xu Ruicheng / Verified manuscript: Zeng Yixuan)
