You are currently working on a dissertation in Washington, what does it look like when you are there – how big a role will the topic of Ukraine play in the US presidential election campaign, which also worries us from the point of view of regional security, and how did Volodymyr Zelensky’s very controversial visit to the US look like?
Compared to Zelensky’s previous visits [šī bija trešā kopš kara sākuma] many significant differences were evident. First, his address to Congress, which received a standing ovation a year ago, was missing. What’s more, after the meeting between Zelensky and House of Representatives Speaker Republican Mike Johnson, the joint press conference was missed, which outlined that most likely there were disagreements during the meeting behind closed doors. It must be admitted that, of course, one is this Republican attitude, which we will touch on in a little more detail, the other is nuances in communication that also came from the US President, Democrat Joe Biden. If we remember Biden’s initial messages both from Washington and during his visits to Europe, specifically Poland and Kyiv, he said: “we will support Ukraine as long as necessary”, and now this message has changed to “as long as we can”. This clearly indicates that US support for Ukraine is not without measure and that some degree of success is expected in return.
