Ukraine’s Rapid Entry into NATO and Its Impact on Putin’s War Objectives

Ukraine’s rapid entry into NATO will convince Russian President Vladimir Putin that he has lost the main objective of the war in Ukraine. This was stated by former US ambassador to NATO and former Washington representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker during a conference in the European Parliament, Ukrinform reports.

“I am convinced that NATO policy today inadvertently sends a signal to Putin to keep fighting. Because we say that Ukraine will become a member in the long term, but we cannot bring it into NATO while this war continues. This is an incentive for Putin to continue the war. I really think it’s time to send the exact opposite message – that Ukraine will become a member of NATO as quickly as possible,” Volker explained.

According to him, such a step will mean that Ukraine cannot lose. “Then for Putin the continuation of this war will be pointless and for Russia it will be destructive,” he added.

At the same time, Volcker emphasized that he was expressing a personal point of view, not the position of the US government. It is believed that the practical implementation of such an intention is not so difficult. At the same time, there are concerns that Ukraine’s membership could lead to escalation, risking the use of nuclear weapons or a direct confrontation between NATO and Russian forces.

“We can talk, in particular in the format of the NATO-Ukraine Council, what Article 5 (of the Washington Treaty) will mean for Ukraine and what steps the Alliance will take in accordance with this Article to protect Ukraine. Article 5 does not contain specific obligations to send troops, there is talk of a collective response. We have such a collective response now, because NATO is already providing training, equipment, intelligence data to Ukraine,” the diplomat emphasized.

Volcker also added that NATO could do more to help Ukraine, specifically closing its skies to Russian attacks.

A number of media reports that NATO member countries have not overcome their differences on the issue of the recent accession of Ukraine. The US and Germany oppose such a step and insist that the process be determined by conditions rather than political considerations.
