Ukraine is preparing for mass transportation of trucks across the Ukrainian-Polish border in container trains, writes Forbes Ukraine.

As informed by Valery Tkachev, deputy director of the Department of Commercial Work of the Ukrainian Railways, 23 wagons are currently loaded for the test trip.

If the first test train run is successful, the transport of trucks across the border by rail will begin on a larger scale.

Polish truck drivers have been blocking key border points on the border with Ukraine for more than three weeks, protesting against what the drivers believe is unfair competition from their Ukrainian colleagues.

It has already been reported that Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki urged the European Union (EU) to restore the entry permit system for Ukrainian trucks, as protests by Polish carriers against unfair competition, as the drivers claim, have continued for several weeks.

Polish truck drivers block Ukrainian trucks at border crossings in protest against the EU’s decision to scrap the permit system following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The reliefs were supposed to end in June, but they were extended for another year.

“We strongly and unequivocally call for the reintroduction of the transport permit system for Ukrainian trucks,” Moravetskyi told reporters.

“The system was valid until the spring of 2022, and it worked well. The European Commission modified it and truck drivers are now blocking the border,” explained the Prime Minister.

As reported, the situation on the Ukrainian-Polish border can cause losses of at least EUR 30 million in export turnover for the Latvian food industry, Ināra Šure, the chairperson of the Latvian Food Enterprises Federation Council, previously informed the LETA agency. If the situation is not resolved, the Latvian food industry could lose 30 million euros within a month.
