Ukraine’s Grain Sales Likely to Remain Banned in Eastern Europe: Extension until September in the Works

Ukraine is likely to remain banned from selling grain in five Eastern European countries. The countries fear competition from the cheaper Ukrainian grain and already enforced a temporary ban last month, which expires on Monday. An extension to September is in the works.

This is reported by the Polish Minister of Agriculture Robert Telus, who has received a proposal for an extension from the European Commission. The ban will continue until September 15.

Ukraine is an important producer of grain and recently this has increasingly ended up in Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia. This irritated the five countries, which cannot produce as cheaply as the Ukrainians, which led to anger among farmers in their own country.

Brussels therefore already introduced a provisional ban until June 5 in May. The Polish minister says he hopes that the extension will take effect on Tuesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is against the ban. He believes that his country should be given space to sell the grain in as many places as possible. His country is currently at war with Russia and needs as much revenue as possible to pay for the fight.

Another deal was recently extended. This is the grain deal between Ukraine and Russia. Both countries have agreed not to block grain exports via the Black Sea. Many grain ships export the grain through that sea.
