Ukraine’s Frustration Grows as Hungary Refuses to Support Against Russian Aggression

“I’m tired of refuting these nonsensical arguments. We heard from the very beginning that Ukraine is doomed. Every time we succeed on the battlefield, these voices become quieter, but then they return. It’s all blah blah blah. These people say, to speak, to advance our narratives as we pave the way for victory,” he said.

Kuleba believes that Orban is not an ally of the President of the aggressor country of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.

“I hope he is still an ally of the EU and NATO. But the political understanding is very similar in his office and in the Kremlin,” he said.

Context:

After the start of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation from the EU countries, only Hungary and Austria refuse to provide Ukraine with weapons to counter Russian aggression, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported.

Hungarian high-ranking politicians, in particular Orban, have repeatedly made statements that were in line with Russian propaganda. In particular, he said that Ukraine “will never win the war,” that Russia, as a nuclear country, “cannot be driven into a corner,” that “the war can only be ended by peaceful negotiations between Russia and America,” and so on.

In April 2023, Orban was outraged by the statement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that Ukraine would become a member of the Alliance.

Budapest does not support EU sanctions against the Russian Federation and has repeatedly called for their revision. On May 17, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that “Ukraine is behaving more and more hostile towards Hungary,” since “Hungarian schools in Transcarpathia will not be able to work” from September 1, and the Hungarian OTP Bank Ukraine has included in the list of international sponsors of terrorism. The Hungarian Foreign Minister promised to block any military assistance to Ukraine at the level of the European Union until Kyiv cancels the status of an international sponsor of the war for OTP Bank.

Orban in early June called for preventing a Ukrainian counteroffensive. Kuleba replied that Ukraine wants a just peace, which will primarily provide for the restoration of territorial integrity.
