Ukraine’s Defence Minister: Western Arms Arriving Late, Hindering War Effort Against Russia
In a recent statement, Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Rustem Umerov, expressed his concerns about the delayed arrival of western weapons, which he believes is hindering their war effort against Russia. Umerov stated that Ukraine is losing territory in its ongoing conflict with Russia because only 50% of the promised weapons from their western partners have reached Kyiv on time. This delay in the supply of western equipment has resulted in setbacks and casualties on the battlefield.
Despite the challenges they face, Umerov emphasized that Ukraine’s troops have been proactive in building new fortifications and thousands of strongholds. However, without timely delivery of western arms, their efforts are being hampered. Umerov admitted that it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to execute their plan without the necessary supplies.
According to Umerov, Russia has spent a staggering $150 billion on its all-out attack on Ukraine, which amounts to 15% of its entire GDP. Unfortunately, with House Republicans in Washington blocking a US military aid package, Ukraine’s armed forces are running out of air defense missiles and artillery shells. The promised F-16 jets from an international coalition, including the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium, have yet to arrive. They are expected to be delivered sometime this spring. Umerov stressed the importance of air superiority in winning a war and expressed hope that these jets would arrive soon.
Despite the challenges they face, Ukraine has managed to make some progress. Umerov mentioned that they have successfully regained control over the Black Sea by using drones to sink Russian warships. Additionally, they have reclaimed territory in the north-east and south of the country, specifically referring to the liberation of Kharkiv oblast and the city of Kherson in 2022.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is expected to share his vision on how Ukraine can overcome Russia in a press conference. However, the recent loss of the eastern frontline city of Avdiivka has cast a gloomy shadow over the nation. Zelenskiy will address the media amidst challenging circumstances both domestically and internationally.
Rustem Umerov, a Muslim and Crimean Tatar, has been serving as Ukraine’s Defence Minister since September. His predecessor, Oleksii Reznikov, was dismissed due to corruption scandals within the ministry. Umerov strongly condemns corruption, particularly during times of war, stating that it is worse than terrorism. He assured that measures are being taken to eradicate corruption routes within the government agencies involved and prevent further issues.
Despite the shortages in artillery, Ukraine has significantly increased its drone production. They are even constructing their own version of Russia’s Lancet drone. These drones have the capability to hit strategic targets deep inside Russia, with some models capable of flying up to 500 miles. Additionally, Ukraine has produced over a million first-person view drones. Officials have indicated that these home-produced drones will serve as the first line of defense against Russia’s armored vehicles and infantry.
Umerov described the ongoing conflict as a war of firsts, highlighting the unprecedented use of over 8,000 missiles against Ukraine and the extensive involvement of drones. As Ukraine continues to face challenges in its war effort against Russia, they remain determined to utilize all available resources to defend their territory and protect their people.
