Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief’s Controversial Statements on the Stagnant War with Russia

In an interview with The Economist last week, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, General Valeryj Zaluzhnyj, declared that the war is moving into a new phase. He described the phase as a stagnant war of attrition and that Russia can use this phase for military reconstruction.

The statements were not well received by President Volodymyr Zelenskyj. That the war is at a standstill does not agree with what the Ukrainian president himself has said, and on Saturday the deputy head of Zelenskyi’s administration, Ihor Zhovkva, moved against the comment.

He believes the military leaders should avoid making public statements about how things are at the front.

– Because then we make the attacker’s job easier. I am sure that everything has been read very carefully and that conclusions have been drawn, Zhovkva said at a press conference, according to Kyiv Independent.

According to Zhovkva, the comment must have also created “panic” among the Western allies who have contributed billions in support, writes New York Times.

– Not stuck

On Saturday, Zelenskyj himself denied the claim that the war is deadlocked.

– A lot of time has passed and people are tired. But this is not a stalemate, I must stress that once again, he said.

The public criticism of General Zaluzhnyj came a day after one of his subordinates, the head of special forces Viktor Khorenko, was fired.

The US worried

The public split between the Ukrainian president and the general comes at a time when Ukraine is struggling with warfare, both militarily and diplomatically, writes the New York Times.

Stopping Ukraine aid

NBC wrote on Friday that Biden administration officials are concerned that Ukraine is running out of forces, while Russia has seemingly endless supplies.

Ukraine depends on the support of its Western allies. In several of these countries, the conflict in the Middle East has taken the main focus recently and the willingness to send more support to Ukraine has been met with increasing scepticism.

In the US, for example, parts of the Republican Party have openly stated that they are skeptical of more US support for Ukraine.
