Ukraine’s Allies to Form Coalition for Long-Range Missile Supply, Macron and Scholz Clash

After the meeting, it became known that Ukraine’s allies will form a coalition to be able to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles. French President Emmanuel Macron said Paris, Berlin and Warsaw would work together to prevent Russia from winning the war in Ukraine while avoiding direct conflict with Moscow.

“Today we agreed on a number of priorities – among other things, we will immediately buy more weapons for Ukraine, and we will do it on a global scale. This is a significant improvement,” said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“Secondly, the production of military equipment will be expanded, also in cooperation with partners in Ukraine. Thirdly, we will create a new coalition for the purchase of long-range missiles within the framework of the Ramstein format. And fourthly, we will also increase our support within the European Union. We made very important decisions this week in Brussels. “

Macron and Scholz’s contrasting personalities are one reason for the rift, and before the meeting Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was expected to be able to improve relations between the two leaders and achieve greater unity on how to help Ukraine.

Tusk joined the leaders of France and Germany in a meeting in Berlin for the first time since returning as Polish prime minister.

Dubbed the “Weimar Triangle,” this tripartite format of cooperation between European powers is being sought by those involved to revive it after relations soured under Poland’s previous nationalist government.

Meanwhile, the differences between France and Germany’s position have become more pronounced after Berlin announced that it would not supply long-range missiles “Taurus” to Ukraine, as their service would require German soldiers on the ground in Ukraine, which Scholz is not ready for.

On the other hand, Macron’s statement last month that the presence of Western troops in Ukraine should not be ruled out was met with a brief rejection by Scholz. Germany criticizes France for the relatively small support for Ukraine.

Germans believe that Macron talks a lot about war, but France does not contribute nearly as much to the Ukrainians as Poland or Germany.

France and Germany blame each other for their chosen policies regarding support for Ukraine. After today’s meeting, it seems that some acrimony has been smoothed out, as there was a willingness to purchase arms and ammunition for Ukraine together and not only those produced in Europe – as Macron has long demanded.

Macron has previously warned Western powers not to show any signs of weakness towards Russia.

The leaders of France and Germany also position themselves differently in the upcoming European elections. Scholz calls himself the “chancellor of peace”, while Macron has decided to press Russia harder, thus fighting against rivals in France itself – against the extreme right.
