Ukraine Winter Weather Forecast 2023-2024: What to Expect

There are only a few days left until December. Winter will begin next week. Forecasters have prepared a preliminary weather forecast.

What will winter be like in Ukraine? Should we expect big frosts, or vice versa – warm weather? Vera Balabukh, head of the department of applied meteorology and climatology at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute, spoke about this.

What will the weather be like in winter 2023 – 2024

The meteorologist noted that over the past 30 years, winter in Ukraine has become significantly warmer compared to previous decades. Average long-term air temperatures over the season increased by almost 1.5 degrees.

It is curious that the greatest warming is observed in January. This month became 2.0 – 2.5 degrees warmer compared to 1961 – 1990.

However, a significant increase in air temperature is observed in February. In December there is also an increase throughout Ukraine. However, these changes are the smallest during the winter season and amount to about 0.5 degrees.

It is expected that December 2023 may be 2 – 3 degrees warmer than recent decades. As a result, positive air temperatures may prevail over a large territory of Ukraine during the month. This does not mean that there will be no frost at all, just periods with abnormally high temperatures can be quite long,
– Vera Balabukh emphasized.

She added that the average air temperature for January and February in 2024 may be 2 degrees above the climate norm. By the way, in February, which has become significantly warmer than in recent decades, next year positive temperatures may also prevail over a large territory of our state.

According to world forecast centers, in the last month of winter the weather in Ukraine can be very unstable. Increased cyclonic activity is likely. Consequently, there will be more precipitation and wind speed will increase. However, rain or snow will depend on the air temperature.

“Severe frosts in winter in Ukraine are unlikely, except in the highlands of the Carpathians. Most likely, the winter will be the same as last year, and possibly warmer. However, floods of Arctic air are likely throughout the season, although they will be mostly short-term,” Balabukh concluded .
