Two Sandown Mine Minesweepers (MCMVs) are being transferred from the Royal Navy to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to strengthen Ukraine’s maritime capability.
“Strengthening the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ maritime capabilities, in particular countering the threat from Russian sea mines, will help restore Ukraine’s maritime exports,” said Defense Secretary Grant Shapps.
It is noted that the ships will be purchased by Ukraine with the help of the UK Export Credit Agency.
“These ships will provide vital capabilities to Ukraine that will help save lives at sea and open up vital export routes that have been severely restricted since Putin began his illegal all-out invasion,” Shapps said
Sandown Ships (MCMV)
The Sandown class ships are equipped with two diesel engines that provide a maximum speed of 31.4 km/h.
The vessels are equipped with trawls for searching and clearing mines. In addition, they have anti-aircraft and anti-submarine weapons.
The Sandown class ships are in service with the Royal Navy, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
UK aid to Ukraine
We previously wrote that Great Britain and Norway created a “maritime coalition” to help Ukraine. The association will strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to conduct combat operations at sea.
We also wrote that the Ukrainian Armed Forces received Martlet missiles from Britain, which will help fight drones more effectively.
We previously reported that, according to British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, Britain intends to maintain the level of assistance to Ukraine or even increase it.
By the way, in the summer of 2022 it became known that the British Navy was training the Ukrainian military to operate two Sandown class minesweepers.
