According to Boris Pistorius, Germany and Portugal are the only two countries that have committed to send a version of the A6 Leopard 2. Berlin has promised 14 such units, Portugal will transfer three more.
It will be difficult for Western countries to assemble two divisions of Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine, as previously promised. However, the Allies are struggling to make sure this is done. About it declared German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, reports Bloomberg.
According to him, Germany and Portugal are the only two countries that have committed to send a version of the A6 Leopard 2. Berlin has promised 14 such units, Portugal will transfer three more.
“We will not reach the size of a battalion,” the minister said.
Pistorius noted that Poland had assembled about 30 units of the older version of the A4 Leopard 2, almost enough for a standard 31-man Ukrainian battalion.
However, many of these tanks are in poor condition and need to be repaired before being used on the battlefield. In addition, this equipment will arrive in Ukraine only at the end of April.
Recall, on February 15, the media reported that Denmark and the Netherlands withdrew from the “tank coalition” for Ukraine. Copenhagen is no longer going to send 44 tanks of the most modern modification. According to journalists, Finland also thought about canceling the transfer of this military equipment.
On February 7, Pistorius announced that European countries plan to transfer more than 100 Leopard 1A5 tanks to Ukraine. From 20 to 25 units should be delivered by the summer, and up to 80 by the end of the year
