“We have a window of opportunity here from now until the spring when they start their operation, their counteroffensive,” Austin told reporters at a meeting of the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group in the German city of Ramstein. “It’s not long and we have to put the right options together.”
Austin said Western allies could further increase support for Ukraine.
“We could all do more,” Austin said after the US-led meeting, while stressing that Berlin was a “reliable ally” despite Germany’s refusal so far to approve deliveries of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine
Meanwhile, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, expressed serious doubts whether Ukraine will succeed in expelling Russian troops from its territory this year.
“From a military point of view, I still believe that it would be very, very difficult to militarily drive Russian forces out of all of Ukraine this year,” Milly said.
